# Add, view, and delete test images

> Add test images to a FlexiLayout Studio batch, set image preprocessing and page import options, and then view or delete pages from the Batch pane.

## Add images to a batch

You can add images to a batch using one of three commands:

| Command                           | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  |
| --------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Add Images**                    | Adds one or more images to the batch.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        |
| **Add Images from Folder**        | Adds all images from a specified folder to the batch. Select **Import pages from FLS projects** to import images from any FSP and FCP projects in the folder (images are imported from all the batches in the project), or **Add images from subfolders** to include images from subfolders.                                                                 |
| **Import Pages from FLS Project** | Imports pages from an existing FlexiLayout Studio project. If the project contains multiple batches, you are prompted to select the batches to import images from. Information about the classes or alternative layouts associated with the pages is retained, and any preprocessing results from the existing FlexiLayout Studio project are also imported. |

These commands are available in the **File** menu and in the shortcut menu of the **Batch** pane. They are also available as buttons in the **Batch** pane when you create a new batch.

When you import images into an existing project, a new batch is created and the pages are added to that batch.

## Image processing settings

You can specify image processing settings when adding images. In the **Open Images** dialog box, click **Image Preprocessing Settings**, and then select the settings you need in the dialog box that opens.

### Assemble to reference documents

Specify how reference documents are assembled:

* **One document per file** creates a separate document for each image file.
* **Group by page count** creates a document from the specified number of image files. For more information, see [Reference document assembly](/flexi-capture/fls/settings/etalon-assembling).

### Image processing

Select **Pre-recognize images on adding** to recognize an image automatically, immediately after it is added.

### Image enhancement

Specify image enhancement profiles for the uploaded images.

An image enhancement profile can include the following settings:

| Group                     | Setting                                              | Description                                                                                                                           |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| General image processing  | **Rotate images by**                                 | Rotates an image in the specified direction: 90° clockwise, 90° counterclockwise, or 180°.                                            |
| General image processing  | **Convert color and gray images to black-and-white** | Converts color images to black-and-white automatically when they are added to a batch.                                                |
| General image processing  | **Despeckle images**                                 | Clears noise from images. Despeckling works only on black-and-white images.                                                           |
| General image processing  | **Remove all color marks**                           | Removes all color marks from images, such as stamps or signatures in colored ink.                                                     |
| Recommended for photos    | **Correct resolution of photos**                     | Selects the optimal resolution for photographs automatically.                                                                         |
| Recommended for photos    | **Autocrop**                                         | Searches for page boundaries on an image and crops the area that contains relevant information. It also corrects skew and distortion. |
| Recommended for photos    | **Reduce ISO noise**                                 | Removes digital noise from images.                                                                                                    |
| Recommended for photos    | **Whiten background**                                | Cleans up image backgrounds.                                                                                                          |
| Automatic skew correction | **Use separators to correct skew**                   | Corrects skew based on vertical and horizontal separators.                                                                            |
| Automatic skew correction | **Use black squares to correct skew**                | Corrects skew based on black squares.                                                                                                 |
| Automatic skew correction | **Use text to correct skew**                         | Corrects skew based on text.                                                                                                          |

<Warning>
  If the source text on an image is too bright or is printed in a very thin font, make sure that **Despeckle images** does not remove important elements such as punctuation marks or thin letter elements.
</Warning>

The automatic skew correction options are enabled by default. Keep them enabled unless skew correction is performed incorrectly. For example, a poorly aligned stamp or a sloping graph may be treated as separators, which results in incorrect skew correction.

**Use image enhancement profile** applies a previously created [image enhancement profile](/flexi-capture/fls/project/image-enhancement-profiles). If some of the images being processed are photographs, you can apply enhancements designed specifically for photos. To do this, select **Use special profile for photos** and select an appropriate secondary profile.

### PDF file processing options

| Option                                                                   | Description                                                                                                            |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Auto (FlexiLayout Studio will choose between PDF text layer and OCR)** | Chooses the correct file processing option automatically, depending on the availability and quality of the text layer. |
| **Prefer PDF text layer if available**                                   | Uses the available PDF text layer.                                                                                     |
| **Use OCR only**                                                         | Performs optical character recognition even if a text layer is available.                                              |

### Office document import options

You can specify import settings for [common office files](/flexi-capture/fls/appendix/supported-formats#supported-document-formats). When you import files in commonly used office formats, FlexiLayout Studio converts them to PDF, using either its own conversion module or third-party software.

To use third-party software for conversion to PDF, select either or both of these options:

| Option                                 | Supported versions                    |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------- |
| **Allow the use of LibreOffice®**      | LibreOffice 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 5      |
| **Allow the use of Microsoft® Office** | Microsoft Office 2010, 2013, and 2016 |

Keep the following in mind when you use third-party software:

* Processing results may vary depending on which third-party software is selected.
* If both options are selected, the most suitable office application is selected automatically. The selected application is indicated in the respective task log.
* If the **Allow the use of Microsoft® Office** option is selected:
  * Your copy of Microsoft Office must be activated.
  * You must run FlexiLayout Studio as an administrator (click **Authentication** to open the authentication settings dialog box).

## When to use a reference alternative or class

Use a reference alternative or class when working with a FlexiLayout or classifier that has multiple alternatives. This ensures that the FlexiLayout is applied correctly. Automatic selection of a reference alternative or class for imported images also reduces the workload of operators when working with large batches that contain images from different sources.

## When image import settings apply

A reference alternative or class is created when images are imported from an existing FSP or FCP project. This happens when all of the following are true:

* You use the **Import Pages from FLS Project** or **Add Images from Folder** command on the **File** menu.
* The specified folder contains an FSP or FCP project.
* The **Import pages from FLS projects** option is enabled.

You can change the import settings in the **Image Preprocessing Settings** dialog box: click **Page Import Settings** in either the **Add Images from Folder** or the **Import Images from Project** dialog box. The reference alternative or class creation settings you specify when adding images through **File → Add Images from Folder** also apply when you add images through **File → Import Images from Project**, and vice versa.

## Page import settings

You can set up how images are imported from existing FlexiLayout Studio projects in the **Page Import Settings** dialog box.

Options in the **Batches** group determine which batch the new images are added to.

| Option                                | Description                                                                     |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Import all pages to current batch** | Adds all images from all detected batches to the current batch.                 |
| **Create new batches**                | Creates a new batch and adds images from all detected batches to the new batch. |

Options in the **Page class** group determine how the reference alternative or class is created. The **Maintain page reference alternative/class** option determines whether information about the reference alternative or class of imported pages is imported. If it is cleared (set to **\<None>**), no such information is added to the project.

| **Use alternative/class of the same name if exist** | If a reference alternative or class in the source project matches the name of one in the current project, the existing one is used and no new one is created.                                                                                                                                                                               |
| **Always create new alternative/class**             | If a reference alternative or class in the source project matches the name of one in the current project, a new one is created with a prefix added to its name (see the **New Alternative/Class name prefix** options). Headers and footers from the old reference alternative are imported to the new one. No other elements are imported. |

Options in the **New Alternative/Class name prefix** group determine how new reference alternatives or classes are named.

| Option            | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Project name**  | Combines the current project name and the original name of the reference alternative or class: `<Project name>_<Original name of alternative or class>`. For example, if the current project is **Halloween\_Form** and the imported alternative or class is **Main\_Group**, the new reference alternative is named **Halloween\_Form\_Main\_Group**. |
| **Custom prefix** | Combines the custom prefix you specify and the original name of the reference alternative or class: `<Custom prefix>_<Original name of alternative or class>`. For example, if the custom prefix is **My\_Prefix** and the imported alternative or class is **Main\_Group**, the new reference alternative is named **My\_Prefix\_Main\_Group**.       |

## View and delete images

To open a page image, double-click it in the **Batch** pane.

You can see the properties of an open image in the **Properties** dialog box.

To go to a specific page, select **Image → Go to Page** from the main menu, and then enter the page number.

To delete one or more pages from the batch, select them in the **Batch** pane, and then select **Delete Pages** from the **Batch** menu or from the shortcut menu of the batch.

You can also add images to a batch using the drag-and-drop feature of Windows Explorer.
