# About ABBYY FlexiLayout™ Studio

> ABBYY FlexiLayout Studio creates formalized descriptions (FlexiLayouts) of semi-structured documents so data capture applications can extract their fields.

**ABBYY FlexiLayout Studio** is a software application for creating formalized descriptions (FlexiLayouts) of documents with variable layouts, also known as semi-structured documents. Document processing applications then use these FlexiLayouts to capture data from the documents that they describe. FlexiLayout Studio is built on ABBYY’s groundbreaking IPA technology, which imitates the way living beings recognize objects.

## Semi-structured documents

Semi-structured documents differ from fixed documents in that the exact location of their fields is not known in advance. For this reason, a data capture application needs additional information about the data fields to locate them on the documents and read the information they contain.

ABBYY’s FlexiLayout technology lets you create formalized descriptions that tell the data capture application how and where to find particular fields. With FlexiLayout Studio, you can describe the layouts of both simple and complex documents quickly and easily.

## Use with a data capture application

Used together with a data capture application such as ABBYY FlexiCapture, ABBYY FlexiLayout Studio automates data capture from semi-structured documents such as invoices, waybills, order forms, and headers of incoming documents.
