# Anchors

> Anchors align a scanned form with its template and determine its orientation during processing; ABBYY FormDesigner offers black square and corner types.

An **anchor** is an element of a machine-readable form that is used for matching a form with its template and determining its orientation during processing.

Adding anchors to a form is an important stage of form design.

ABBYY FormDesigner allows you to add two types of anchor to your forms: **black squares** and **corners**.

<table width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><p><strong>Type</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>Description</strong></p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Black Square</p></td><td><p>The anchor has the shape of a square.</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Corner</p><p><img src="https://mintcdn.com/abbyy/8aWHPAJyzWmTqglX/images/flexi-capture/form-designer/Corner.gif?s=fa568877c5c13be94129e6c2574d98f1" width="30" height="30" data-path="images/flexi-capture/form-designer/Corner.gif" /></p></td><td><p>The anchor has the shape of a corner.</p></td></tr></tbody></table>

Only one type of anchor can be used on a form. When specifying the type of anchor to be used on your form, you also need to set its properties:

* **Size**: the length of each side of the black square or the length of each side of the corner
* **Line Width**: the line width of each side of the Corner (this parameter is not applicable to black squares)
