# Index documents manually

> Index documents manually on the Scanning Station by creating document types, importing types from FlexiCapture, and assigning them to scanned images.

Manual indexing is useful when you need to scan documents, fill in the values of several fields, and export the documents as images. Because the documents are not exported to FlexiCapture, you do not need to create a Document Definition for them on the Project Setup Station. You can specify registration parameters for all documents or only for documents of a specific type. First, create and set up document types.

## Create document types

You can create document types on a Scanning Station in two ways:

* Create them from scratch. For images you index by hand, create a separate batch type on the Scanning Station.
* Import the names of document types from a batch type in FlexiCapture. The imported types are added to the list, and you can then set up registration parameters for them.

<Warning>
  If you import registration parameters from FlexiCapture again (for example, when updating a batch's registration parameters), all batch and document registration parameters created on the Scanning Station are deleted. To avoid this, create separate batch types in FlexiCapture for such batches.
</Warning>
