# Local settings on Scanning Stations

> Set up local settings on Scanning Stations so Operators independently create batch types, configure processing and export options, and send batches.

Local settings let Operators work independently. Each Operator creates batch types and specifies all processing and export settings on their own Scanning Station. Use local settings when Operators do not need the same predefined batch types.

## How local settings work

When [exporting batch types to the server](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/interface/select-storage), the Administrator makes sure the **Distribute these batch types to all Scanning Stations** option is disabled. When this option is disabled, the Scanning Station uses the local settings that its Operator specified.

The Administrator and the Operator have the following tasks when using local settings.

| --------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Gives the Operator permissions for a project. | Creates new batch types, specifies batch type settings, scans images using these settings, and [exports](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/interface/batch-type-export) the batches. |

## Switch to global settings

Even when using local settings, Operators can switch to [global settings](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/scan-station/modes). To do so, select the **Update batch types on start automatically** option on the **FlexiCapture Server** tab of **Tools → Options...**.

  If the [Update batch types on start](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/interface/fc-tab) option is disabled on the Scanning Station but the Administrator has enabled global settings (by enabling the [Distribute these batch types](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/interface/select-storage) option), the Scanning Station still imports the global settings every time it starts.
