# Process documents with global settings

> Follow the basic steps for processing batches with global settings in ABBYY Scanning Station: scanning, document separation, image editing, and export.

You can select the processing options for individual batches immediately before you start a processing stage. Processing a batch of documents involves the following basic steps.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Scan">
    To start scanning, click **Scan** on the [toolbar](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/interface/toolbars). The Scanning Station uses the last scanner source. To choose a different source, click the arrow to the right. For more information, see [Scan images](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/scan-station/how-to-scan).

    <Info>
      The scanner must be connected to your computer. For directions on connecting the scanner, refer to the scanner's documentation. If no scanner is connected, you can only use a virtual scanner to import images from a folder.
    </Info>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Separate documents and batches">
    You may need to place some scanned pages into different documents or batches in the [Batches](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/interface/navigator-win) window or the [image window](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/interface/image-win). For more information, see [Work with documents, batches, and pages](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/scan-station/how-to-batch-and-document).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Edit images">
    The Scanning Station includes tools to rotate images, correct skew, remove noise, and apply other enhancements before export. For more information, see [Image enhancement](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/scan-station/how-to-work-with-images).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Export the scanned documents">
    When you finish working with a batch, save it to a local folder or an FTP folder, export it to ABBYY FlexiCapture, or export it with a script. To choose a destination, click the arrow next to **Send To**, select a destination, and click **OK**. For more information, see [Export batches](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/scan-station/how-to-export).
  </Step>
</Steps>

To set up processing for a series of commonly used batches, see [Process documents](/flexi-capture/scanning-station/shared/scan-station/how-to-work-batch-type).
