# Select a scanner source

> Configure which scanner (hardware or virtual) is used when scanning for a batch type or a batch.

You can set the scanner source in two places:

* **For a batch type** — when creating the batch type with the [Batch Type Wizard](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/batch-type-wizard), or later on the **Scanning** tab of the [Batch Type Properties](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/batch-type-properties-dbox) dialog box.
* **For individual batches** — on the **Scanning** tab of the [Options](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/options-dialog-box) dialog box.

## Configure scanning settings

    Select one of the available scanners, or a virtual scanner if you want to import images from a folder.

  <Step title="Configure scanner options">
    For a **hardware scanner**, choose which interface to use:

    * **Native scanner interface** — uses the driver's own dialog box when you click **Scanning Options...**
    * **Application interface** — uses the [Scanner Settings](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/scanner-settings) dialog box when you click **Scanning Options...**

    Use the **Show scanning options before scanning** check box to control whether the scanner settings dialog appears every time a scan starts.

    For a **virtual scanner**, specify the folder that contains the images to import (use **Browse...** to pick one). Select **Remove successfully loaded files** if you want the source files deleted after import.

  <Step title="Optional: use these settings automatically">
    Select **Use these scanning options** to start scanning with the configured settings when you click **Scan Pages** or choose **File > Scan Pages**. If deselected, Scanning Station prompts for scanner and settings each time.
