# Create a new batch

> Pick a batch type and start a new batch in Scanning Station.

Every batch belongs to a batch type. A **batch type** is a collection of settings that determine how a document is scanned, processed, and exported.

## Before you begin

A batch type must already exist. Batch types are usually created by the [Administrator](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/admin/batch-types), though an Operator can also create them if granted permission.

## Create the batch

<Steps>
  <Step title="Select a batch type">
    On the [main window toolbar](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/main-window-toolbars), pick a type from the **Selected batch type** field.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the batch">
    Choose **File > New Batch**, or press **Ctrl+N**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter registration parameters (if prompted)">
    If the batch type requires it, enter the [registration parameters](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/operator/specify-registration) when prompted.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Depending on the batch type settings, a new batch can also be created automatically — either when scanning starts or after a set number of pages have been scanned.
</Note>
