# Specify registration parameters

> Add required metadata — like scan date or operator name — to batches and documents before export.

**Registration parameters** are text properties that identify a batch or document. Common examples: the date a document was scanned, or the operator who scanned it.

You need to enter registration parameters manually before [exporting a batch](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/operator/exporting-batches).

You can enter registration parameters in two places:

* In the [**Registration Parameters** window](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/registration-params-window).
* On the **Registration Parameters** tab of a batch's or document's properties dialog box — right-click the batch or document and choose **Properties…**.

<Note>
  Registration parameters marked with an asterisk (\*) are required. A batch can't be exported until every required field has a value — this is enforced by the [batch integrity check](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/operator/check-integrity).
</Note>

For more on how registration parameters relate to batch types and document types, see [Registration parameters of batches and documents](/vantage/documentation/scanning-station/interface/registration-params-batches).
