Default skills are the built-in, read-only skills in the Vantage Skill Catalog. A Vantage release includes about 100 default skills, many with several versions, and installing every version can take an hour or more. The defaultSkills values of the vantage-selfhosted chart control which skills and versions are installed.
Installed default skills can’t be removed. Removing a skill or version from your values leaves it installed, so choose the skill set before the first installation. Every later change can only add skills.

Choose a mode

Set defaultSkills.mode to one of the following: The default is all because a skill built from a default skill stops working if that default skill isn’t installed. Use minimal or custom only when you know which default skills your skills depend on.
vantage.minimalInstall controls workload sizing only and doesn’t change the skill set. Before release 2026.10.16, minimalInstall: true also installed only the newest version of each skill. If you run a minimal installation, set defaultSkills.mode: minimal before you upgrade to keep the smaller skill set. If minimalInstall is true and defaultSkills.mode is all, the chart prints a warning when you install or upgrade.

Find skill IDs

The custom mode identifies skills by ID. For the current release, see the Catalog at the end of this page. The skills, IDs, and versions can differ between releases. Each vantage-selfhosted chart includes the catalog for its release in files/default-skills.yml, so if you install a different chart version, read the catalog from that chart. To print it, pull the chart and extract the file:
Each entry lists the skill’s ID, name, and available versions:
$chart_uri and $selfhosted_version follow the conventions in Install variables.

Install a custom selection

List the skills to install under defaultSkills.skills, using IDs from the catalog:
  • versions is optional. If you omit it, the newest version in the catalog is installed. Set it to all to install every version in the catalog, or to a list to install only those version numbers.
  • An ID or version that isn’t in the catalog fails the chart render, so a wrong value is caught when you install or upgrade.
  • An empty skills list installs no default skills.
  • A Process skill references other skills. If you include one, also include every skill it references.

Add skills after installation

1

Update your values and upgrade the chart

Add the skills to defaultSkills.skills, or change defaultSkills.mode, and run helm upgrade on the vantage-selfhosted release.
2

Trigger a sync

A values change alone doesn’t trigger a sync. Annotate the Vantage resource to reprocess it:
The operator runs the OCI migration again, regenerates the workloads, and updates the default skill installation. Only the versions that aren’t installed yet are installed, and artifacts already in your destination registry aren’t copied again.
3

Confirm the skills are installed

The update can take a few minutes to reach the cluster. First confirm that the new skills appear in the DefaultSkillInstallation resource:
The resource’s Installed condition can still show True from the previous selection, so kubectl wait --for=condition=Installed can pass too early. Instead, wait until the Installed condition’s observedGeneration matches the resource’s metadata.generation:

Known limitations

  • The selection doesn’t shorten the OCI migration. The OCI migration copies the images for every default skill version in every mode. Choosing fewer skills shortens the installation, but not the migration or the space used in your registry.
  • The selection exists only in chart values. The Vantage resource doesn’t carry it, so you can’t change the skill set by editing the resource directly.
  • Installed: True describes the last installation. It doesn’t reflect skills deleted from the database or a restored database until the selection changes again. A failed installation isn’t retried automatically. To retry it, change the selection or restart the skill installer operator.
  • Additional workloads metadata takes precedence. A workloadsConfigMap.additionalMetadata entry that sets charts.skill-installer-def-installation.values.defaultSkills replaces the selection from defaultSkills. For more information, see Additional workloads metadata.

Catalog

This table lists the default skills in the current release, with the IDs and versions to use in defaultSkills.skills. The Versions column lists every version that all installs. A custom entry without versions installs the last version in the list. The minimal mode installs the last version of each skill, plus any additional versions listed in the chart’s files/default-skills.minimal.yml. If you install a different chart version, read the catalog from that chart instead, as described in Find skill IDs. Catalog for vantage-selfhosted chart 0.91.1 (release 2026.10.16).
