A new form can be created using the Quick Start dialog box (opens when you start the application), by selecting File → New…, or by pressing Ctrl+N on your keyboard. The Quick Start dialog box lets you create a new form using any of the three available methods:
  1. Create an empty form. On the right of the dialog box, select the form you want to create - an empty form or one with basic elements. A form with basic elements can also be created by clicking the New button on the Standard toolbar.
    • If you select Empty form, ABBYY FormDesigner will create a form without any elements on it.
    • If you select Empty form with base elements, ABBYY FormDesigner will create a black and white form with some basic elements on it:
      • anchors (four black squares in the corners of the form and one additional black square anywhere on the form; later when editing the form you can replace the black squares with other anchors of your choice),
      • identifier element (a barcode with digits), and
      • text element where the title of the form should be located.
  2. Create a form based on a form sample. On the right of the dialog box, select the *.dtf file you want to use as the sample for the new form. By default, form samples are saved to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Templates.
  3. Create a form using the Form Creation Wizard.
    • Specify form page properties - page size and orientation.
    • Specify the type of your form (black-and-white, gray background, color background), background size (for background forms: entire page or only inside margins), and anchor type.
    • Select form layout elements. You can add a title (provide title text), an identifier (specify its type and position), and a template (select language).
    • Add standard elements to the form from the list: name, surname, contact information. On the right of the dialog box, you will see a preview of your form. To add/delete an element, use the >> / << buttons.
    • To exit the wizard, click Finish. The form you created will be automatically opened in the main window. You will then be able to edit and save it.
