ABBYY FlexiCapture can be supplied with a handwritten text recognition (HTR) module for processing documents that contain handwritten text, for example handwritten amounts, addresses on envelopes, and text on some insurance forms. The HTR module recognizes both hand-printed and handwritten text. The HTR module is installed separately from the main product. Contact ABBYY for the HTR module installation package. The module currently supports capture of English text only.
If your documents contain only hand-printed text, you can use the built-in ICR technology instead. Select Standard recognition and specify ICR as the text type. For more information, see Standard recognition options.

Set a field to handwritten text recognition

HTR mode applies only to fields, not to an entire page. It works on multi-line fields.

Open the field's properties

Right-click the field and select Properties from the shortcut menu.

Open the Recognition tab

Click the Recognition tab.

Select the filling type

From the Filling type dropdown list, select Handwritten text recognition.

If you choose handwritten text recognition mode for a field, you can specify only one recognition language for that field.

Install the HTR module

The HTR module is not installed by default.

Install FlexiCapture

Install ABBYY FlexiCapture 12 Release 4 or later.

Run the HTR installer

Launch the ABBYY.HTR.1.0.exe file. Contact ABBYY to obtain this file.

Follow the setup program

Follow the instructions of the setup program.
You can also install or uninstall the module in silent mode from the command line. For example:
The first command installs the module silently, the second installs it into the specified folder, and the third removes it.

HTR licensing

Your license comes with an HTR counter, initially set to the number of pages with handwritten text available to you. This counter decrements when the Document Definition in use contains at least one matching HTR field. The global page counter decrements in any case. When a Document Definition with multiple sections is used, the HTR counter decrements only for the sections with matching HTR fields. For example, if a Document Definition has three sections and only the first has an HTR field, then recognizing a three-page document where only the first page contains handwritten text decrements the HTR counter by one page and the global counter by three pages. Re-recognizing individual fields on previously recognized pages does not affect the counters. Whether you keep or delete the results of a previous recognition, submitting a page for re-recognition does not decrement the counter.
