Image enhancement profiles

With image enhancement profiles, you can automatically make necessary changes to images on Scanning Stations or, in a distributed installation, on the Application Server. You set up profiles on a Scanning Station or on the Project Setup Station. In a standalone installation, the Administrator Station takes the place of the Project Setup Station. ABBYY FlexiCapture includes two preconfigured profiles:

Photo – Recommended editing settings for photos of documents.
Scan – Recommended editing settings for scanned documents.

You can also create custom image enhancement profiles. For more information, see Create a custom image enhancement profile.

Apply an image enhancement profile automatically

To automatically apply an image enhancement profile to all incoming images, assign it in one of the following places:

Assign the profile to	How
A batch type, on the Project Setup Station or Administrator Station	In the batch type properties dialog box, click the Image Processing tab and select Use image enhancement profile.
An import profile, on the Project Setup Station or Administrator Station	In the import profile properties dialog box, click the Image Processing tab and select Use image enhancement profile.
A Scanning Station	Assign the profile to a batch type, or apply it automatically when loading images onto the Scanning Station.

Apply an image enhancement profile manually

You can also apply an image enhancement profile manually, either when you load images from files or after they are loaded.

Apply a profile while loading images from files

Open the Load Images dialog box

Open the Load Images dialog box to load images from files.

Open the image processing settings

Click Image Processing Settings. The Image Processing dialog box opens.

Turn on the profile

Select Use image enhancement profile.

Apply a profile to images that are already loaded

Right-click a page or a selection of pages and click Edit Image → Apply Image Enhancement Profile. Alternatively, on the Edit menu, click Image → Apply Image Enhancement Profile.

Create a custom image enhancement profile

You create image enhancement profiles on a Scanning Station or on the Project Setup Station or Administrator Station. Use the Image Enhancement Profiles tab of the Project → Project Properties dialog box.

Create a new profile

On the Image Enhancement Profiles tab, click New. The tab for creating an image enhancement profile opens.

Load a preview image

Load an image to test the set of editing actions. Click the Load Preview button in the bottom-left corner of the panel.

Compose a set of tools

Turn tools on or off using the toggle to the right of each action on the image enhancement panel. For the available tools, see Image editing tools.

Set the sequence of actions

The sequence can matter, for example, when you need to configure brightness and contrast before removing color elements. Some actions have a fixed position. You can move the others in one of the following ways:

Point to the three vertical dots to the left of the action name, and drag the action to the position you want.
Select the action in the list, hold down Shift, and press the Up or Down arrow key.

Apply the changes

Click Apply to apply the changes to the test image. To apply editing changes automatically when you select an action, enable the Auto Apply option. With Auto Apply on, each change takes some time to apply.

Name and save the profile

In the Name field at the top of the panel, specify a name for the profile and click OK.

The new profile appears in the list of available image enhancement profiles. To edit a custom profile, select it from the list on the Image Enhancement Profiles tab and click Edit.

Image editing tools

Tool	Description
Split	Splits an image horizontally or vertically into the selected number of separate pages. Make sure documents on all images are placed evenly, or significant information may be lost.
Resolution	Changes the resolution of an image.
Rotate	Rotates an image.
Flip	Flips an image horizontally or vertically.
Invert Colors	Inverts the colors of an image that contains light text on a dark background.
Autocrop	Automatically finds page boundaries, crops the area that contains data for extraction, and corrects skew and distortions.
Remove ISO Noise	Removes noise from an image.
Remove Motion Blur	Removes blur caused by moving a document, camera, or scanner.
Photo Correction	Whiten Background whitens the image background. Equalize Brightness equalizes the image brightness.
Remove Color Marks	Removes all color marks from an image, for example, stamps or signatures in colored ink. Select Remove marks of specified colors only to remove marks of a specific color. Otherwise, the tool removes all color marks except gray-scale marks.
Deskew	Use black separators to correct skew corrects image skew using separators. Use black squares to correct skew corrects image skew using black squares. Do not use Deskew on photos of documents, because it can reduce OCR quality.
Remove Geometrical Distortions	Removes geometrical distortions. The Autocrop tool includes this functionality, so if your profile uses Autocrop, you do not need this tool.
Remove Scanner Shadow	Removes scanner shadow from an image.
Brightness & Contrast	Configures the brightness and contrast of an image.
Convert to B&W	Converts color and gray images to black and white.
Despeckle	Removes very small noise elements from an image (black-and-white images only). If the text is very light or in a thin font, check the element size you set. Make sure it does not delete significant elements, such as punctuation marks and thin letter strokes.

Create a profile from a preconfigured profile

You cannot edit the preconfigured profiles, but you can create a new profile based on one, add or delete actions, and save it.

Copy a preconfigured profile

On the Image Enhancement Profiles tab, select one of the preconfigured profiles and click Copy.

Edit the copy

Select the copied profile from the list and click Edit.

Adjust the tools

In the panel that opens, edit the profile.

Name and save the profile

In the Name field, specify a new name for your custom profile and click OK.

Import and export an image enhancement profile

You can export custom image enhancement profiles to use on a Scanning Station or on the Project Setup Station or Administrator Station. ABBYY FlexiCapture exports each profile to an XML file.

Start the export

On the Image Enhancement Profiles tab, select the profile you want to export and click Export.

Choose a location

In the window that opens, select where to save the profile (locally or on a server).

Save the profile

Enter the path and click OK.

To import the profile on the Project Setup Station or Administrator Station, use the Image Enhancement Profiles tab in the Batch properties dialog box. On a Scanning Station, use the Tools → Processing Profiles menu.
