To acquire images, you must select a scanner source and start the scanning process. During scanning, you can monitor the quality of the images and interrupt scanning defective images if necessary.

Scanner Source

Before you can start scanning, you must select a scanner source, such as a hardware or virtual scanner.
  1. Select Tools > Options… and in the Options dialog box, click the Scanning tab.
  2. Select the desired scanner source and make the necessary settings.
Important! The scanner must be connected to your computer. Please refer to the scanner’s documentation for directions on connecting the scanner. If no scanner is connected, you can only use a virtual scanner to import images from a folder.
If you are scanning a batch of a certain type, all the scanning settings, including the scanner source, are made in the properties of the batch type when creating it with the Batch Type Wizard, or on the Scanning tab of the Batch Type Properties dialog box after the batch type has been created.

Initiating the scanning process

After you have selected your scanner source, you can start the scanning process with one of the following actions:
  • By clicking the Scan Pages button on the main window toolbar
  • By selecting the Scan Pages item from the File menu
  • By pressing Ctrl+S
If you want to select a scanner source and immediately start scanning with this source:
  1. Click the arrow to the right of the Scan Pages button on the toolbar and select the Select and Scan… item or
    • Select File > Select and Scan… or
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  2. In the Select and Scan dialog box, select one of the available scanner sources, make the necessary settings, and click Scan.
Alternatively, you can load images from a folder. In the Batches window or Image window, select the batch or document into which to load images and then:
  1. Right-click the batch or document, select Load Images… from the shortcut menu, and select the images to be loaded.
  2. Press Ctrl+O or select File > Load Images… from the shortcut menu, and select the images to be loaded.

Stopping the scanning process

You can stop the scanning process at any time by clicking the Stop Scanning button on the main window toolbar or by selecting Stop from the File menu.

Inserting scanned pages into a batch

Before you start the scanning process, you can select the page after which the scanned images are to be inserted: select this page in the Batches window and select File > Insert Pages.

Scanning tips

You can set the scanning options in the built-in scanning dialog box or in the scanner driver dialog box. For more information about the dialog box, see Select and Scan dialog box. Place your documents face down on the scanner, making sure they are properly adjusted. Skewed images may be converted incorrectly. Conversion quality depends on the quality of the original document and scanning parameters. Poor image quality may have an adverse effect on the quality of conversion. Be sure to select the scanning parameters appropriate for your document. More information about some of the scanning options is available in these sections:

Tuning brightness

The program will display a warning message during scanning if the brightness setting is incorrect. You may also need to adjust the brightness setting when scanning in black-and-white mode. If the resulting image contains too many “torn” or “glued” letters, troubleshoot using the table below.
Your image looks like thisRecommendations
This image is suitable for OCR.
Characters are “torn” or very light- Lower the brightness to make the image darker.
- Scan in grayscale. Brightness will be tuned automatically.
Characters are distorted, glued together, or filled- Increase the brightness to make the image brighter.
- Scan in grayscale. Brightness will be tuned automatically.

Selecting the optimal resolution

Recognition quality is affected by the resolution at which documents are scanned. Low resolutions may adversely affect the recognition quality. We recommend using the grayscale mode and a resolution of 300 dpi for all documents that were produced by a printer.
Important! Vertical and horizontal resolutions must be the same.
Setting the resolution too high (over 600 dpi) increases the recognition time. Increasing the resolution does not yield substantially improved recognition results. Setting an extremely low resolution (less than 150 dpi) adversely affects recognition quality. Recommendations for choosing the resolution depending on the font size:
  • 300 dpi. For typical texts (printed in fonts of size 10pt or larger)
  • 400–600 dpi. For texts printed in smaller fonts (9pt or smaller) and images with barcodes
